Children make up a large part of the population of the Central African Republic; 43% of the population is under 15 years old. The long years of armed conflict have hit children in the Central African Republic hard. Thousands of children have lost their parents in the civil war, have been recruited as child soldiers or have been traumatized by the violence to which they have been exposed. In some particularly crisis-ridden regions, only 14% of children are able to attend school. We give these boys and girls access to a high-quality education.
SOS Children's Villages supports children and young people in the Central African Republic through SOS Children's Villages and youth facilities. Children who have lost their parents or can no longer stay with their families are taken into a family-like, protected environment. The first SOS Children's Village was opened in 1990 in the Central African Republic. Almost 150 children benefit from this commitment. A further 2,000 parents with children in the vicinity of SOS Children's Villages are supported through financial or social assistance.
